Stump Grinding in Colfax, CA

Colfax houses tend to sit either above the road or below it, and almost never level with it. That's the defining feature of grinding here.

More often than not the stump is down a run of railroad-tie steps, or up a bank behind the house, and the honest question is whether a machine can physically get to the wood. We work that out on the first look and tell you straight. What we don't do is bounce a grinder down a set of steps and hope — that's how equipment gets damaged and how somebody gets hurt.

Where there's a route, we take it. Where there isn't, you deserve to know before you've waited a week on a booking.

Pine that didn't survive, and oak holding a bank

The weather that comes across I-80 here is hard on pines, and dead ones are a steady source of work. Oaks tend to be doing structural duty on the banks, which is worth thinking about before removing one entirely.

Both species grind. Pine chips are light and fluff up into a bigger pile than you'd expect. Oak chips are dense and stay put. Either way it's 6 to 12 inches below grade.

Older lots and close neighbors

Colfax has a lot of older housing stock with short side yards and a neighbor near enough to have a conversation with over the fence.

We work off your side, keep the chips on your ground, and leave the shared fence alone. If we need a few feet of somebody else's yard to make the setup work, we'll ask rather than assume.
